Tragic Collision on NC-87 Claims Life of Medical Resident, Injures Others

In Lee County, a tragic car accident resulted in the death of a man on NC-87 near Frank Wicker Road. The incident occurred late Saturday night when a southbound Ford Escape, driven by 32-year-old Davis Anugo, was struck head-on by a GMC Yukon traveling in the wrong direction. The collision did not end there; the Yukon further sideswiped a Nissan Versa following behind Anugo. The impact of the crash left Anugo dead at the scene, while the occupants of the Nissan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which responded to the scene, is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The road was closed for about two hours as they cleared the area, and discussions with the Lee County District Attorney's Office about potential charges are scheduled for Monday. Anugo, who was in his third year of residency at UNC Chapel Hill, is mourned by the community.

Students from UNC-Chapel Hill were reportedly prevented from attending the April 17th public meeting of the UNC System Board of Governors in Winston-Salem, where the DEI policy affecting diversity and inclusion was being voted on. The board cited full capacity as the reason, despite the students' claims of their right to attend under state law. Legal experts have questioned the legality of this exclusion, highlighting the need for reasonable public access to such meetings. The incident has prompted discussions about the enforcement of open meetings laws and the rights of the public to participate in governance.

Orange County residents will have multiple opportunities to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at several drive-thru events scheduled for this April. On April 18th, from 1 to 4 pm, the Passmore Center in Hillsborough will host one such event, providing a convenient way for locals to rid their homes of unnecessary medications. Following this, on April 27th, there will be two additional opportunities: Wegman’s Grocery Store in Chapel Hill will offer this service from 10 am to 2 pm, and the Walmart in Hillsborough will host a morning session from 9 am to 12 pm.

For those unable to attend these events, Orange County provides a year-round solution through several permanent drop boxes located throughout the area. Residents can find the nearest drop box location by visiting the Orange County website at www.orangecountync.gov/dropboxes. These initiatives are part of the county's commitment to public health and safety by ensuring medications are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
