Chapel Hill Council Approves Longleaf Trace, Enhancing Senior Living Options

Chapel Hill's Longleaf Trace apartment project marks a significant advancement in the provision of affordable housing for seniors. Officially approved by the Town Council, this new development is located at 1708 and 1712 Legion Road and is specifically designed for residents aged 55 and above.

Situated on a three-acre site that previously hosted a wooded area and two rental homes, Longleaf Trace is conveniently placed across from Ram’s Plaza and just south of an existing affordable housing complex on Legion Road. Its proximity to shopping centers and parks caters perfectly to the preferences of older adults who wish to live independently in their community.

The initial phase of this project will see the construction of 48 affordable apartments, with plans to expand to 60 units in the future. In keeping with sustainable development practices, over one-third of the land will be preserved as green space, including a scenic stream, enhancing the environmental and visual appeal of the area.

Addressing the demographic shifts in Orange County, where the senior population is expected to grow by 50% by 2041, Longleaf Trace is set to meet an urgent need for accessible and comfortable senior living spaces.

Orange County Leads Charge in Statewide Measles Prevention Efforts

North Carolina is proactively preparing for the spread of measles, led by Dr. Erica Pettigrew and the Orange County Health Department. Efforts include educating healthcare providers, optimizing facility readiness, and emphasizing rapid reporting and community vaccination. These initiatives include extensive training for local healthcare providers, many of whom may have only encountered measles in their medical textbooks due to its rarity in recent years.

Orange County residents will have multiple opportunities to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at several drive-thru events scheduled for this April. On April 18th, from 1 to 4 pm, the Passmore Center in Hillsborough will host one such event, providing a convenient way for locals to rid their homes of unnecessary medications. Following this, on April 27th, there will be two additional opportunities: Wegman’s Grocery Store in Chapel Hill will offer this service from 10 am to 2 pm, and the Walmart in Hillsborough will host a morning session from 9 am to 12 pm.

For those unable to attend these events, Orange County provides a year-round solution through several permanent drop boxes located throughout the area. Residents can find the nearest drop box location by visiting the Orange County website at www.orangecountync.gov/dropboxes. These initiatives are part of the county's commitment to public health and safety by ensuring medications are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
